Left Mandible of Dog #2

The mandible gradually tapers from the molars to premolars and the dentition twists only slightly towards the buccal and lingual sides—features common to Jomon dog mandibles. Furthermore, the deep masseteric fossa, where the end of the masseter muscle is attached, suggests that although it was a small dog, it had strong masticatory capability. Moreover, resorption of the alveolar bone thought to be caused by periodontal disease can be seen in the front part of the second molar.
