Presentation on our project at the 77th General Assembly of the Japanese Archaeological Association.

    May 28 and 29, 2011: The annual General Assembly of the Japanese Archaeological Association was convened at Kokugakuin University’s Shibuya campus in Tokyo. Hirofumi Kato, Kunio Yoshida and Takao Sato attended. They made a joint presentation, “Research Report on the Joint Japan-Russian Project in Baikal Siberia: The Search for Human Culture in the OIS3 Period”.



Invitation of the research cooperator to the University of Tokyo.

  Ekaterina Lipnina, a participant to the joint project from the Irkutsk State University, from September 2010 through March 2011, undertook an internship in the Museum of the University of Tokyo, where she worked with archeological collections, scientific literature, studied the Japanese language and the Japanese methods of archeological studies, and prepared two joint publications [Report]. 



Publication of article in Quaternary International.

 Feburary, 2011: Fedora Khenzykhenova and other published an article on this project in the journal Quaternary International.

International symposium at Keio University.

    November 27 and 28, 2010: Keio University hosted an international symposium titled “Siberia and Japan in the Late Paleolithic Period: Adaptive Strategies of Humans in the Last Glacial Period”. With a total of 100 participants, the symposium provided a rare opportunity for research members involved in the project to meet each other in person. Participants engaged in lively question-and-answer session and discussion, and we also put into perspective many issues concerning Paleolithic research in Siberia and East Asia. We would like to express our gratitude to those who attended the symposium and to the staff members who supported and helped us to prepare and manage the event. Joint presentation in the 64th Annual Meeting of the Anthropological Society of Nippon held in Date city.

    The 64th Annual Meeting of the Anthropological Society of Nippon was convened from October 1 to 3, 2010 in Date city, Hokkaido.  A member of our research group, Hitoshi Fukase, Hajime Ishida, Masaomi Kudaka, Takao Sato and Takheiro Sato joined the meeting. Takao Sato made a joint presentation entitled, “Archaeological Investigation into the Late Pleisotcene sites of Baikal Siberia”. [Abstract]



Summer Fieldwork in 2010

     The excavation of the Bol’shoj Naryn site was undertaken in July 2010. [More info]



Publication of research results in Paleolithic Archaeology.

    April 2010: Hirofumi Kato published a paper on some of the results of our project in the periodical Paleolithic Archaeology, vol.73.

Joint presentation in 2010 SEQS Conference held in Rostov-on-Don.

    2010 SEQS Conference was convened from June 21to 26, 2010 in Rostov-on-Don, Russia.  A member of our research group, Fedora Khenzykhnenova joined the conference and made a joint presentation entitled, “Mammoth Fauna of Baikal Siberia, Results of Recent Archaeological Studies”. [Abstract]



Preliminary visit of Japanese members to Irkutsk and Moscow, to confer on the upcoming excavation and study archaeological material

    From March 15th to 21st of 2010, six members of the Japanese excavation team, Takao Sato, Hirofumi Kato, Kunio Yoshida, and Suzuki Kenji, revisited Irkutsk to discuss this summer’s excavation and examine stone tools and bone implements unearthed from the Igitejskii-Log and Sedova sites. The members also stayed in Moscow from March 21st to the 25th where they met with Dr. Mikhail Mescherin to exchange information on the results of their respective excavations. At the request of Dr. Mescherin, Hirofumi Kato delivered an impromptu lecture at Moscow State University.



Joint presentation in the 13th workshop of the Japanese Zoo-archaeolgical Society  held at Ibaraki Nature Museum

  The 13th workshop of the Japanese Zoo-archaeological Society was convened on December 19 and 20, 2009 at Ibaraki Nature Museum. A member of our research group, Takao Sato joined the workshop and made a joint presentation entitled, “Archaeological Sites and Associated Vertebrate Fossils  in the OIS3 Stratum of the Baikal Area, Siberia”. Joint presentation in the 19th congress of the IPPA held in Hanoi

     19th Congress of the Indo-Pacific Prehistory Association was convened from November 29 to December 5, 2009 in Hanoi. A member of our research group, Hirofumi Kato joined the congress and made a joint presentation entitled, “Technological Evolution, Adaptation and Emergence of the Upper Paleolithic in Northeast Asia”. Joint presentation in the symposium held in Beijing

     In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the discovery of the first skull of Peking Man, an International Symposium was jointly convened from October 19 to 23, 2009 in Beijing. Members of our research group, Fedora Khenzykhenova and Takao Sato joined the symposium and made a joint presentation entitled, “Upper Paleolithic Mammal Fauna of the Baikal Region,  East Siberia, Russia (New Data)”.
