Book of Hours (Text of
the Hours of the Virgin). Bruges; early 16th century. MS single leaf; vellum; 148 x 127 mm |
|
[recto] The Sext for the Hours of the Virgin. Written in Gothic textura quadrata script. The trompe-l'oeil inhabited border of birds, flowers, butterflies, and strawberries as well as the decorated initial 'D' is by the Flemish illuminator, Simon Bening himself, rather than by one of the artists in his workshop. Bening painted miniatures for the Grimari Breviary, the Da Costa Hours (The Pierpont Morgan Library, M.399), the so-called 'Golf Book' (British Library, MS Add. 24098), the Hennessy Hours (Brussels, Bibliothèque royale, ms. II 158), etc. The leaf was formerly in the collection of Harry Bober. [ョ verso] |
