Forms of Postdramatic Theatre in Africa and Europe

In this workshop, Dr. Koku G. Nonoa from Togo, a researcher at the Institute of Cultural Studies at the University of Luxembourg, focused on Christoph Schlingensief’s theatre works related with characteristics of contemporary African theatre.
The German director Christoph Schlingensief, who actively engaged in theatre productions in Africa and Asia, used African motifs in operas he directed and worked to establish opera culture in Burkina Fasso in West Africa. Although many aspects of his theatrical and operatic activities have been intensively discussed, correlations between postdramatic forms and characteristics of African theatre have not been widely recognized. Koku Nonoa, an expert of the contemporary European and African theatre, reevaluated Schlingensief's theatre works from a perspective that spans both cultures.
